Recap: Awarded a Grant from the Newark Artists Accelerator – October 2020

In October 2020, I was honored to receive a grant from the Newark Artists Accelerator, a program led by Project for Empty Space. The initiative was created to support artists who have shown creative commitment to the City of Newark. I, along with 44 other talented artists, received $1,500 in unrestricted funds to help alleviate some of the challenges we faced during that time.

About the Newark Artists Accelerator

The Newark Artists Accelerator was developed to provide disaster relief aid to artists working in the Newark area. The grant offered artists the flexibility to use the funds as needed, whether it be for materials, studio rent, or personal support during the difficulties of 2020. This initiative was more than just financial support—it was a way to acknowledge and uplift artists who have continued to contribute creatively to the community despite the challenges presented by the pandemic.

My Creative Commitment to Newark

Receiving this grant was especially meaningful to me as it recognized the work I had been doing in and around Newark. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on several public art projects that bring communities together, and this grant allowed me to continue developing my artistic practice. It also served as a vital reminder that art can be a source of healing and connection during difficult times.

Being part of this cohort of artists, including names like Antoinette Ellis-Williams, Armisey Smith, and Shoshanna Weinberger, was an inspiring experience. The collective impact of our work is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Newark’s artistic community.

Looking Forward

This grant not only provided immediate relief but also reaffirmed my commitment to continue creating art that reflects and uplifts the communities I serve. I am excited to see how the Newark art scene continues to grow and evolve with the support of programs like the Newark Artists Accelerator.

Thank you to Project for Empty Space for recognizing the importance of sustaining the artistic voices of Newark. I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to future creative collaborations that inspire and empower.
