New Brunswick Awarded $25K Asphalt Art Initiative Grant for New Community Mural
Exciting news! New Brunswick has been awarded a $25,000 Asphalt Art Initiative grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, one of only 26 cities in the U.S. to receive this funding. This grant is designed to transform public spaces, enhance street safety, and engage residents through community-driven art. As part of this initiative, I’m honored to announce that I will be leading the creation of a vibrant mural at the intersection of Suydam Street and Remsen Avenue, thanks to the support from coLAB Arts and the City of New Brunswick.
What the Grant Means for New Brunswick
The Asphalt Art Initiative aims to use public art to revitalize streets and create safer, more connected spaces for communities. The intersection of Suydam Street and Remsen Avenue was selected for the mural not only because it’s a key location, but also because it’s adjacent to the Unity Square Community Center. This center is a vital hub for the neighborhood, hosting local programming, a food pantry, and a Code Blue shelter.
The mural will also play a role in widening the bike path, further enhancing the area’s accessibility and safety. This project reflects a larger vision of using art to support community conversations and improve the quality of life for residents in this family-friendly neighborhood.
Community Engagement and the Mural Design Process
At the heart of this project is community engagement. The mural’s design will be shaped by conversations with local residents during several community meetings. These discussions will help us understand the needs and stories of the neighborhood, ensuring that the mural reflects the voices of those who live and work in the area.
Dan Swern, producing director at coLAB Arts, emphasized that this project is about more than just beautifying the streets. It’s about using art to bring people together and foster meaningful dialogue about local issues. I’m deeply honored to be part of this effort, continuing my journey as an artist who has always aimed to create work that resonates with and uplifts communities.
My Role and Vision for the Mural
As the lead artist for this project, I’m excited to bring my artistic vision to this important intersection. You may remember my work on the Black Lives Matter mural at George Street, Liberty Street, and Livingston Avenue. This new project is another opportunity to collaborate with the New Brunswick community to create something that reflects both the past and the future of this neighborhood.
The mural is set to be completed by next fall, and I can’t wait to share the progress as we move through the design and installation phases. This project is about more than just art—it’s about connection, expression, and celebrating the power of community.
Stay Connected and Get Involved
If you’re in the area, I encourage you to attend the community meetings and share your voice in shaping this project. It’s an exciting time for New Brunswick, and I’m thrilled to be part of a project that not only enhances the streets but brings people together.
